We offer Stainless Steel merchandise in 304 and 316L
Stainless Steel 304 is the most common and widely-used grade, known as 18-8 stainless steel due to its composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. As an austenitic steel, 304 is non-magnetic, resistant to corrosion from both chemical and atmospheric exposure, and highly resistant to oxidation. However, it is vulnerable to chloride solutions, particularly in saline environments. 304 is ideal for general applications such as kitchen and food processing equipment, liquid storage tanks, heat exchangers, building facades, pressure vessels, and other fresh water applications.
Stainless Steel 316, or marine grade stainless, is renowned for its enhanced corrosion resistance, especially in salt water and saline environments. It is the second most common grade after 304. Typically containing 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum, 316 offers increased resistance to chlorides and industrial solvents. While 316 and 304 have similar mechanical properties, 316 is better suited for marine applications, high-chloride fresh water environments, refining equipment, and pulp and paper processing. It is also certified for use in medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing and surgical implants, though it is less resistant to highly oxidizing acids like nitric acid.
Stainless Steel 304L and 316L are low-carbon versions of 304 and 316, making them more suitable for welding. The reduced carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, reducing the risk of weld decay and intergranular corrosion.
